Although the psychiatrists' diagnostics manual defines a large number of personality disorders (and with the next release due out next year, are about to redefine them), I am of the view that most of the personality disorders are just manifestations of one's core beliefs taken to extremes, and would treat them accordingly. The two exceptions are Borderline personality disorder and Narcissistic personality disorder. Borderline personality disorder is typified by extreme and rapid mood swings between love and hate, quick anger, self-harm (usually by cutting or burning) and suicidal thoughts and behaviours. Narcissistic personality disorder is typified by grandiosity, anger and mood swings (but the mood swings are much slower than for borderline personality disorder)
